Question

Does the RELIEF Act prevent unemployment from being taxed? Why am I being taxed for it? Who can I contact to find out the answer...? I live in Maryland.

I live in Maryland and Governor Hogan signed a RELIEF Act bill that stated that Maryland Unemployment won’t be taxed from the state and locally. I just amended my taxes because I needed to put my 1099 form in, and now I owe almost $1700. Almost $700 for federal and $1000 for Maryland. I read over articles and information from the state website itself and it all says the same- that Maryland unemployment won’t be taxed. Can anyone help me out? Will I get my money back? Or do I really owe it? I contacted the relief act email to see if I can get answers there as well.

you will still have to amend Federal Form 1040.

MD is still working on how to handle the new law, for persons who already filed.
