Yes it gets reported to the IRS and yes you have to report it on your tax return. you should be getting a 1099-G with the taxable amount. do not rush to file until you get it. if you do and the amount on the form differs from what you reported, then you can't recall it to fix unless the return is rejected. if it's accepted then you will have to go through the trouble of filing an amended return.  besides the form should be out before the IRS opens for e-filing on 2/12/2021. right now TT is accepting returns but they are not being submitted to the IRS.
