Question

Does your company have any good reason, I cannot see one, to charge outrageous fees for e-filing state returns and refund processing?

I have been a TurboTax customer for many years, but this is the last. You cannot justify these fees, other than greed.

you must file, and that is what the market will bear. users feel they are locked in to TurboTax.

If you are using Turbotax installed on your own computer, state e-filing is $20 extra for the first state, but it is free to print and mail, if you prefer money over speed.  Refund processing requires opening a bank account in your name at a third party bank to receive the refund, subtract the fees, and transfer the rest of the money to your regular account.  So naturally they charge a fee.  It's stupidly expensive but there are other, more complicated but cheaper ways to do it.  Customers are free to select the service they want and to choose convenience over cost if they want.  (The gas station closest to your house is not obligated to tell you that gas is 20¢ cheaper across town.)

Choose the services you want.  If you believe another tax provider offers better value, use them instead.
