Double taxed income in NY and NJ

Help!

I can't seem to figure out how to calculate what my double-taxed income is!

I worked at a hospital in NYC from January to July 2021. I lived in NY from Jan - May 2021, then NJ from May - Sept, and moved back to NY from Sept - Dec 2021. My W-2 from that job shows both NJ and NY state wage breakdowns in box 15.

I didn't realize I had to complete NJ return first, which will be a part-year resident, so after I completed NY (resident return) and registered it, I was not able to delete and really start over. Now I'm confused as to how to calculate the double taxed income for NJ and it's not pulling in any information! Is the NJ income that the W-2 allocates in box 15 the double-taxed income?

Thank you!

You don’t say where you worked after July. Was it New Jersey or New York?

  • January to May is all NY income. You lived and worked in NY.
  • May, June and July is double taxed income because you lived in NJ and worked in NY.

You should be able to Clear and Start over your NJ return.

Or you can change your NJ filing state to part-year.

  1. In New Jersey, on Other situations that may apply to you select I need to verify my main form or residency selection
  2. Tap Change Residency on New Jersey Main Return
  3. Select Part-year resident
