E-File rejected over lack of 1095-A, I only have 1095-B

Hi,

 

I just tried to file my taxes for 2021 and both my federal and state filings were rejected because I don't have a 1095-A form. The thing is that I've only ever received a 1095-B form from my health insurance company. I haven't received a form from the marketplace as far as I know. I don't see an option to indicate that I have coverage outside of the marketplace when I go to amend that form so...what do I do? When I go to amend the form it only asks me if I've been approved to receive unemployment + if I received my 1095-A. Checking "No" for the last question just takes me to a page that says to make sure I file my 1095-A. Fun. I've contacted Intuit, my insurance company, and am waiting on my broker to confirm that I purchased privately but this is kinda throwing a wrench in my day.

 

Have I indicated something wrong in my filing that's causing this? If so please lmk what I can do to fix it because I literally do not have a 1095-A to enter. Thanks.

Generally, yes, if you did not receive insurance through the marketplace, you can disregard the Form 1095-A section of your return. However, for some people who may not have received marketplace insurance, or may not be aware that they did receive it, their returns are being rejected automatically by the IRS. This is because someone on their tax return did receive marketplace insurance according to the IRS's records. 

 

In that case, these forms have to be included with the tax return in order to electronically file. Otherwise, it would have to be mailed in and the IRS still may insist that their should be health insurance forms attached to the return. 

 

The first thing to do is ensure no one on your tax return had marketplace insurance. They can check Healthcare.gov or the marketplace insurance provider in your state. If they have an online account, Form 1095-A should be accessible within their account. It is also possible that you are included on someone else's return, like a parent or an ex-spouse, so you would want to ensure that no one else has a Form 1095-A on it with you or someone in your family listed as a covered individual.

 

It's also possible that the IRS is just wrong. In that case, you can attach the form so that they accept the electronic filing using @Cynthiad66 step-by-step post above.

 

Entering $1 for your January premium will not impact your return and it should get past the IRS automatically rejecting it for not having the marketplace forms attached to your return. However, if Form 1095-A was issued for yourself or a member of your family, filing without the real form will cause a delay and possibly an automatic change to your tax refund by the IRS.

First, do not AMEND.  You should be able to correct the original return if it was rejected.  Form 1095-B is not required to be entered on the return.

 

You must have answered a question that triggered the Form 1095-A if you have never had insurance through the Marketplace.  If you have never used the Marketplace we will try to remove the check box that says yes.

 

Let's try this work around to see if we can resolve this issue.

To do this take the following steps: 

  1.  Click Deductions and Credits
  2. Scroll down to Medical and Click Show More
  3.  Click Start or Revisit next to the ACA
  4. As you walk through the questions, you will be asked if you received a 1095-A.  
  5.  If you did NOT, click YES anyway.
  6.  Enter 0's for the Marketplace identifier and Policy number.
  7. Enter $1 for January monthly premium amount and SLCSP
  8.  Walkthrough to the end and submit your return.

Hi,

 

Thank you so much for the response. I'm currently having an issue accessing the file because an Intuit customer service employee on the phone told me to switch to Print Filing so now I have to try and regain access because now the software thinks I've already filed my returns (which I have not). I have no idea why she told me to do that but it's causing quite the headache :,)  I'll make sure to do the method you outlined in your reply when I'm able to access it again. Thanks so much.

The following process will allow you access to change your tax return before e-filing. As long as you haven't already mailed your 2021 paper return, you can switch to the e-filing method (through April 18, 2022). However, some states now require e-filing, which means the federal and state must be e-filed together.

 

  1. In TurboTax Online, sign in to your account
  2. Select Tax Home in the left menu
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents
  4. Select 2021, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right area)
  5. Select File in the left menu (expand your browser window if you don't see this, or select the menu icon in the top left corner)
  6. On the Just one more step screen, follow steps 1 and 2 if you haven't already
  7. Select the Start button to the right of Step 3
  8. On the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select I want to e-file
  9. Follow the instructions to e-file your return

This will allow you to file your return through e-file.

The last line of the page that reminds you to enter a 1095-A before you file states: "If you didn't have insurance under the Affordable Care Act, you can disregard this."
