Question

E Filed twice

This morning I was prompted to complete my 2024 tax return. I was sure I had already efiled on the 13th of April. After going through the system and my return I was once again prompted to e file.

Now I just found the efile confirmation from the 13th. How do I cancel the second transmittle?

Are you sure you filed previously? If you had already filed, your return (the second one you just filed) would have been rejected. You can't file 2 returns using the same social security number.

Hmmm, I have the notice that it was accepted by the IRS dated Monday April 15th, fingers crossed that the second one will be rejected.

FYI - If you have the Desktop program you can check right inside your return.    For the Desktop program you have to check the filing status inside the program. Open your return and go up to menu item

File > Electronic Filing > Check Electronic Filing Status

Then save your return with the status. Go to File-Save.

When you efile you get back 2 emails. The first email only confirms the transmission. The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile.
