I was told eBay sales are a ‘secondary business’. Enter the information as I would my business. On a new schedule C. Then I can enter deductions.

resulting in two schedule Cs.

however. When I create a new business. The 1099 K is automatically repeated where you enter 1099 K information.

this seems to be doubling my eBay income. My taxes jump up 4/5k. On a 6k income.

If you have it duplicated, delete the 1099-K's, then delete the Schedule C's.  If you are using the online version, log out of your TurboTax account and then clear your cache and cookies.

When you go back in, IF you are doing eBay as a business, then go to the business income section and follow the steps below.

Federal

  1. Income and Expenses
  2. Show More next to Self-Employment
  3. Start next to Self-Employment
  4. Yes, to you have any self-employment income or expenses
  5. Enter the type of self-employment work you do and you can select that you use your name for your business
  6. Click through a few more screens and you will get to a screen that says "Your XX info"
  7. Click Looks good
  8. Then you will come to a screen that says Let's enter the income for your business.  It will give you the option of 1099-NEC or Other self-employed income including the 1099K , cash and checks.  Here is where you will enter the money you receive.
  9. If you do not select one, it will not let you enter your income
  10. Enter your self-employment income on the next screen
  11. Continue and on the next screen click add expenses

* Please note navigation may differ slightly depending on which version of TurboTax you are using*

This income will be reported on Schedule C which is part of your overall tax return. This also means you will be subject to SE Tax.  If you did not pay SE Taxes in 2024, and if you plan to do this again in 2025, it may be a good idea to make  quarterly estimated payments to cover your SE taxes of 15.3% and avoid penalties.

Taking Business Expense Deductions

If this is NOT a business and you are selling personal items, this should NOT be reported on Schedule C.  Follow the instructions below if this is NOT a business.

To do this in TurboTax you will  take the following steps:

  1. Click federal wages and income
  2. Show more next to Other Common Income
  3. Start next to 1099-K
  4. Select Other for what type of income
  5. Enter the info from your 1099-K
  6. Select "This amount in box 1a is too high or includes some personal transactions" IF you are selling personal items and need to deduct the cost basis
  7. Enter the amount that should not be included
  8. Hit continue
