Election worker income below $600 (no W-2). Should I choose miscellaneous income, then other wages received?

This was seasonal work beyond my normal salaried work.

Yes, and say income was not for profit or a business.

No, this will not be entered as other wages received because you were not an employee.

 

To enter the election worker pay:

  • Click Federal Taxes > Wages & Income
  • Scroll down to Less Common Income
  • Go to the last selection, Miscellaneous Income and click Start
  • Go to the last option, Other reportable income and click Start
  • Answer Yes to Did you receive any other taxable income?
  • Enter Election judge in the description and then the amount.

For various reasons, election work is not considered “work“, and your payment is not considered “compensation“ for working. It is “other income“ and you do not pay Social Security tax or Medicare, tax or self-employment tax on this income.
