Hi.

I've finished my Taxes for 2020, as an Expat living permanently in Germany. However, while the system called up Foreign Tax Credits and asked for  which County I paid the taxes, the Form 1116, however the software did not ask me for the sum I paid in German Taxes, but did however bring up my carryovers from 2016 up to 2019, which was correct.  I wondered however why I wasn't asked for the tax sum paid for General category income.

Due to this, the later  printout or view of my return,  the results  was an empty 2 pages of the Form 1116, but the  printout for the carryovers 2016-2019 Form was correctly printed, incluuding the Statement Form. correctly.

I haven't completed the "File" so that I could go back and start over, or jump back to deductions.

What went wrong here?

TurboTax should ask you to enter the category of income along with the amount.

Go back to the Foreign Tax Credit section.

  • Type foreign tax credit in Search in the upper right
  • Select Jump to foreign tax credit
  • After a few screens, you will have to option to take the Credit.
  • Keep going until you see No Other Income or Expenses. Say NO.
  • Skip Completing Forms 1116 and Foreign Tax Credit Worksheet
  • You will see Choose the Income Type
  • Select the type of income
  • Add Germany in Country Summary (if it's not there already). Edit if it is.
  • You will see Other Gross Income - Germany. Add a description and amount.
