So my ex-wife says she 'can't remember' if she filed married filing separately or single the year we were getting divorced... I'm trying to get my taxes done but would rather stop the back and forth and just figure it out without her involvement... is there a way I can do this?  Help!

Thanks guys.

If legally divorced on or before Dec 31 of the tax year, filing single is the only available "legal" option. If still legally married on Dec 31 of the tax year, then the only options are Married filing joint, or Married filing separate.

So if you were divorced on the last day of the tax year, the only available option to you is a filing status of single.

If you were not legally divorced on the last day of the tax year, then your only available options are MFS or MFJ. If your ex filed incorrectly, that's not your problem or issue.
