Question

Excess contribution to HSA

In 2019 I contributed to an HSA through my employer.  In November I became eligible for Medicare Part A, but my employer continued contributions through the end of 2019.  I filed for a refund of the November/December excess contributions and received them from the HSA in 2020.  Thus, the excess contributions have been withdrawn already.

I have a form 1099-SA that lists a distribution for the excess contributions.  I made NO contributions in 2020.

TurboTax is treating this distribution as though I have not withdrawn the excess contributions, and says I need to withdraw them before April 15, but that I can't because the deadline for 2019 excess contributions has passed.

What is going on?

In the 2020 HSA interview, when you saw the question "Did you overfund your HSA in 2019?", what did you answer?

In your case, since you withdrew the excess contributions for 2019 in a timely manner, you should have answered NO.

The question really wants to know if you CARRIED OVER any excess contributions, and you did not, because you withdrew them. By withdrawing the excess last year, you "cured" the overfunding and therefore don't report it this year.

OK, that is the most likely case, but your situation may be something somewhat different, so if this is not it, please come back and give us more detail so that we can help you.
