F1 VISA FILED AS RESIDENT

Hi

I am currently on an F-1 visa and recently realized that I mistakenly filed my tax return as a resident instead of a nonresident. I understand that I need to file an amended return to correct this error.

Could you please guide me through the process step by step? I want to ensure that I complete everything correctly and avoid making another mistake.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

You will need to file form 1040NR to correct this. TurboTax does not support the 1040NR, but our partner Sprintax does and can help with your non resident return.

If you incorrectly filed Form 1040 and you should have filed Form 1040-NR instead, you will have to file an amended return, Form 1040-X, and attach your Form 1040-NR tax return. Follow the instructions under "Resident and nonresident aliens" on page 2 of the IRS Instructions for Form 1040-X.

Thanks a lot, I am confused, 1040-X should be filed for incorrect one, 1040? and should be paper filed or efiled? Could please give me more details.

Yes, you file Form 1040-X to override the incorrect Form 1040 that you filed. Attach the new Form 1040-NR tax return to the 1040-X. You have to paper file.
