Question

Federal filing different than state filing?

I was puzzled this afternoon to get the following reason as to why I cannot e-file my state tax return:

[State] return filed under special instructions where the filing status is different from the federal return is not eligible for electronic filing.

I have never had issues with this in the 13 years I've used Turbo Tax; can anyone guide me some common things to check for this? I'm not sure what significant difference there would be between my federal & state filing (both my husband and I are on the tax return, filing jointly as married...). Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide!

If your federal return is filed using Married, filing jointly, you are supposed to use the same status on your Utah tax return. This message means that you are using status 9 – Special Instructions for Couples, instead of 2 – Married filing jointly.

If you haven't filed your return yet, you can change it.

    1. Click on State on the left side menu.
    2. Click Continue.
    3. Select Edit to the right of your state.
    4. Continue until you get to, We've Recommended a "State" Filing Status.
    5. Select Married filing jointly.
    6. Continue through the rest of your state return.
    7. Select Review from the menu on the left side.
    8. If any errors are shown, you will need to correct them.
