Federal tax filing and Multiple states filings

Hi,

I have one question for both federal tax filing and state tax filing.

1. federal tax

  • What is 1099-G form?

I haven't received 1099-G form yet. And I didn't receive unemployment benefits but received tax refunds from Iowa and paid tax to New York last year. Do I need to manually include the tax refund from Iowa for federal tax filing this year?

  • How to do tax deductions for job relocation expense?

I drove from New York to Indiana in September last year for my new job within one day. I don't think I saved the receipt for gasoline but I think I paid it with my credit card. How to calculate tax deductions for this moving expense? Would appreciate it if you could give me some simple example to calculate it.

2. state tax

  • Was I a resident in New York state or Indiana state last year?

I stayed in New York state and worked for a bank in Florida from January to March 2021. The bank withdrew New York state tax for those months. Then I changed my job and worked for a bank in Indiana remotely (I was still in New York state) from April to August 2021. I then moved to Indiana in September 2021 due to returning to office requirement. The bank in Indiana withdrew Indiana state tax since I joined the bank even though I was in New York state from April to August 2021.

To add a little more information, I changed my New York driver license to Indiana driver license in September 2021.

In this case, was I a resident in New York state or Indiana state last year?

Thank you for your advice!

Best,

Marina

1A.  If you used the standard deduction for tax year 2020 (most people did), you do not need to enter your IA tax refund as it is non-taxable.  If you did itemize in 2020 then you would enter the refund in the "Other Common Income" section under the federal "Income" tab.  You will be asked follow on questions from your 2020 schedule A to determine how much of your refund is taxable.

1B.  For tax years after 2017, the deduction for moving expenses has been eliminated except for certain armed forces taxpayers on permanent change of station orders.

2A. You were a part-year resident in both IN and NY.  In the "My Info" section in TurboTax you will indicate your resident state as on 31 Dec 2021 was IN.  Then select "Yes" you lived in another state and select NY from the menu.  You will then enter the date you moved to IN.

2B.  Next enter your forms W2 in the federal interview according to your copy of your forms W2.

2C.  You should work your IN return next.  IN will tax your income while you were a resident (Sep-Dec) and income from IN sources while you were non-resident (Apr-Aug).  Go through the IN interview the first time and when you arrive at the page titled "Your Indiana Wages" there will be a box populated with the IN box 16 amount from your IN bank W2.  You need to change that amount to 55% of that amount to represent the Apr-Aug (non-resident period).   Complete the interview with zeros for the rest of IN income as you were non-resident.

Next in the left hand menu:

  1. Click "Tax Tools"
  2. "Tools"
  3. Select "View Tax Summary" in the main screen.
  4. Select the "IN Tax Summary
  5. Find the Total tax amount and write that down.  You will use that amount to get a credit on your NY return for taxes paid to another state.
  6. Click "Back" in the left hand menu to get back to the interview

2D.  "Go over IN again" and this time you need to put in the entire IN W2 box 16 amount.  Any other income or deductions that belong to IN during the Sep-Dec residency period you will allocate in the appropriate boxes.

2E.  Now you can complete your NY state interview.  When asked you will say "No" not all wages belong to NY.  You will allocate in the NY boxes those items that belong to NY while you were a resident there (Jan-Aug).  The wages that belong to NY will be all the Fl bank W2 plus 55% of the IN bank W2.  After allocating income to NY continue the interview to arrive at the NY credit section.  Scroll down to the "Taxes Paid to another state" topic and "Start."  Follow the prompts to enter the double taxed income (55% of IN W2) and the IN tax you paid on that income.

Ultimately you will pay tax to IN for income earned while a resident (Sep-Dec) and non-resident (Apr-Aug).  You will pay tax to NY for resident (Jan-Aug) period and get a credit for the taxes paid to IN during the double tax period (Apr-Aug).
