This is my first year filing with this status HOH 1 dependent under 18. So far I’ve had this on my W4 for about a month and have not had any federal taxes taken out. I am wondering when I will start having the taxes taken out of my checks. I make around 36-38k a year, and I do not wanna get in a situation where I have to pay in come tax time. Any help would be appreciated!

If you will file HOH for 2024, your standard deduction (amount of your income that will be "tax free") will be $21,900.   If you have a child under the age of 17, you will also be eligible for the $2000 child tax credit.   So It may take some months before your employer begins to withhold federal tax from your checks.

So I need to make a total of 21,900 for taxes to start being taken out of my check? That makes a lot of sense to me now. You mentioned the $2000 child tax credit do I get that at the end of the year or is the $2000 added into what I would need to make for taxes to be taken out
