federal withholding

In 2023 my withholding was 7780 and 2024 my withholding was only 4181. I filed the same each year as head of household, claimed 1 child over the age of 17 still in school and I take out an additional 1200 a year towards my withholding. There is an over 3500 dollar difference between my withholding from 2023 and 2024 and I feel that my employer may have made a mistake but they claim that all is correct. I only made 3200 dollars more in the year 2024 and I am wondering why I am having to pay out taxes for 2024 when 2023 i got back over 3000.00.

Talk to your employer about increasing your 2025 withholding.

I can increase my withholdings at any time I just dont understand why this year I have to pay the irs when last year I got back over 3000 dollars in my returns and filed the same exact way both years.

Ask your employer why they took out 3500 less withholding.   That is the 3,000 you got back last year.   If you want a bigger refund you need to have more withholding taken out.

Nobody here can see your return or tell you exactly what changed this year to make your amount due higher.  It might help to print out both years and compare each line to see what may have changed.

I did this and noticed the 3500 dollar difference and took this to my HR dept. All they said was that there was tax increase for filing head of house hold in 2024 but it was 1100 dollars in difference.
