Question

File taxes before excess contributions processed

Hello, I have completed my taxes, but I have not filed them yet. I got an extension because I need to withdraw HSA excess contributions. I also owe some state taxes so I would like to file and pay that before April 15.

Can I file even though I have not completed the hsa withdrawl? If I file now do I still have until Oct. to get the excess contributions out of the hsa since I have the extension?

Thanks!

Have you already requested from the HSA custodian the "withdrawal of excess contributions", and do you have documentation of this (screenshot, email, whatever)? If so, I would go ahead and file, and don't let the slow HSA custodian hold you up. Just make sure that you keep the documentation in your tax file in case any one ever asks.

I only have a picture of the printed form that I mailed, but I have not heard anything from the custodian yet. But don’t I have until Oct. to figure all that out anyways?

    Thanks!

Yes, you can file your return before the withdrawal is finalized. You'll just need to ensure that the withdrawal is complete before the extension deadline.

You can also pay the state tax that you have due by April 15 without filing your return. Then you can file your return at a later date when your excess contribution withdrawal is finalized.
