Filed taxes separately, want to amend my return to file jointly

Hello,

I am married and already e-filed my federal return, but found out later it would have been a better idea to file jointly with my wife. I imagine I have to pay back the difference which I'm already prepared to do. Question is, do I just file the 1040X by mail and they send me a bill for how much I owe?

Married filing jointly we get $39. When I filed separately, I got ~$800. When I did my wife's taxes, she was going to owe north of 2k, so obviously $800 is less than that.

Thanks

if her return has not been filed do not file it.

use your return and enter her data include the $800 or so refund you got.  send a check for any balance due.  you may be able to avoid interest and penalties this way since payment isn't due until 7/15/2020. mail and get proof of delivery.  the IRS is way behind in processing paper return so if you wait for them to bill you there may be interest/penalties for the post 7/15/2020 period. expect 8 weeks or longer to hear from the IRS.
