Question

Filing an extension, what should be the filing status ?

We need to file an extension for the 2021 tax Return.  Each year we file our taxes as MFJ.  There are some additional income transactions which we need to report this year and we may decide to file as MFS if the computations indicate that's the best filing status for us. So, at present I am unsure if we will be filing as MFJ or MFS.

How do I file our extension, as MFJ  or two separate extensions as MFS ?   Eventually when I do file my taxes , will th e IRS allow me choose a filing status other than the one under which I have filed an extension ?

If you had both the taxpayer's and spouse's SSN on the joint extension, it is valid for both spouses' MFS returns.

However, if you end up filing Married Filing Separately, don't be surprised if you receive a notice.  You may have to explain the circumstances.
