Filing joint return and wife worked part of year in different state. Does this require 2 state returns or 3? Also, what does TurboTax charge for state filing if printing

I worked in VA, and my wife held 2 jobs (1 in VA and 1 in DC). I'm not sure if I'll be filing 1 VA return (joint) or 2 (each of us) and 1 in DC for her. 2 questions here..

1) how many state returns will I need to file?

2) How much does turbotax charge for each state file, considering if I do it by printing them out instead of e-file?

Your wife should file D-40B form to request a refund of the taxes withheld from her pay.  And next time she works in DC, request that VA taxes (or no taxes) be withheld as DC and VA have a reciprocal agreement.  The form can be found here: http://otr.cfo.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/otr/publication/attachments/2016%20D-40B_6.29.16....

You should be able to file this by hand...all one page.

On your resident VA tax return, you report all income, including that earned in DC.

Answer:  One joint VA resident tax return, one DC single page request for refund.

What is your state of residence?  What states withheld income taxes?

state of residence is VA. Both states have withheld their respective taxes.
