Hello. My son graduated from college in May 2023 and I supported him financially (including tuition) the whole year until he started a full time job in August 2023. He turned 24 in August 2023 as well. Since he was working full time from Aug 20th through the year I changed my filing status from head of household to single. But now I'm wondering if I could have filed head of household on my 2023 return. I live in TN and he moved to GA and filed his own tax return.

Thank you!

If he had gross income of $5,050 or more in 2024 then no one can claim him as a dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules,

He cannot be claimed as a dependent under the Qualifying Child rules since he is age 24 in 2024.

You would have to file as Single sine he is no longer your dependent.
