Can I have a different filing status on my federal return in my state return, for example, married, filing, jointly on federal return and married, filing separately on state return in Utah

Generally no.  You will need to use the same filing status for your Utah return as you do for your federal return.

A married couple who files a joint federal return may file separate Utah returns ONLY IF:

    • one spouse is a full-year Utah resident, AND
    • the other spouse is a full-year nonresident.
