My 19 year old college student lived with me for 10 months at our home.  I paid for her apartment as well.  Can I claim Head of Household?  It is stating that I must claim single.

Go back over your answers to the questions.

The screens can be tricky. Basically, if the question applies to residence, it pertains to Head of Household.

    Dependency Questions:

    What's Megan's relationship to you?

We know Megan is_, but we have to ask: Did she pay for most of her living expenses?

Do you have an agreement with Megan's other parent about who can claim her?

Is Megan's other parent claiming Megan per your legal agreement?

Are you letting Megan's other parent claim Megan for 2018?

    Head of Household Questions:

    What's Megan's relationship to you?

How many months did Megan live with you in 2018?

Where did Megan spend the most nights in 2018?

Did a relative live in your home and help support Megan?

    Head of Household

You may be able to file as head of household if you meet all the following requirements.

    1. You are unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year. See Marital Status , earlier, and Considered Unmarried , later.
    2. You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.
    3. A qualifying person lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school). However, if the qualifying person is your dependent parent, he or she doesn't have to live with you. See Special rule for parent , later, under Qualifying Person.

    Qualifying Person

See Table 4 to see who is a qualifying person. Any person not described in Table 4 isn't a qualifying person.
