Filing Taxes

I filed my own taxes this year, not knowing I was going to be claimed as a dependent. Return was rejected because I WAS claimed as a dependent. I have been waiting for my tax expert to get back to me. My questions; Do I even need to file my own taxes?

If I pay for all of my college MYSELF, do those who claimed me as a dependent get that tax return money instead?

Based on what you've said, you should not have been claimed as a dependent.

However, your parents have filed and have claimed you as a dependent.

This will take time, but the only way to resolve the situation as you stated is to file your taxes by mail.

  • The IRS will see that both of you are claiming you as a dependent.
  • They will send both of you a tax notice,
  • You will each have to state what the situation is.
  • The IRS will determine the outcome based on each of your statements.
  • If you are verified you will get the refund you submitted and "he" will have to pay it back.
