I've been told we don't need to file taxes for my son. He only worked a few months while in school and made $1770. Does he file or no?

If he got a 1099 - Yes, he has to file.

If he got a W-2 - No, he does not have to file, but if he had withholdings in Box 2, he should file to get the money back.   If he does file and you claim him as a dependent, make sure he marks thee box that he can be claimed by someone else so his return does not get rejected.   And if you are filing to recoup federal withholding, there is no deadline.
