If you are referring to the 5 digit PIN required to e-file the tax return, you can use any 5 digits you self-select.  You also need to enter the correct 2022 AGI to e-file the 2023 tax return.

If you are referring to the 6 digit Identity Protection PIN that you receive from the IRS each tax year, you need to retrieve the IP PIN from this IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file.  Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.

If you already tried to e-file by the October 15 filing deadline and your return was rejected, then you can enter your PIN and try to e-file again, since you have five days after that deadline to re-file a rejected return.  But if you are trying to e-file for the first time, you will not be able to.  Your return will have to be printed, signed and mailed.
