First----what do you really have?  Do you get Social Security benefits?  Or do you get SSI?  They are not the same thing.   If you get Social Security, then they send you a SSA1099 in January to use on your tax return.   If you get "SSI" there is no kind of document issued and you do not enter it on a tax return.

If you have a SSA1099, you enter it on your federal return----but if Social Security was your ONLY income for 2023 you are not required to file a tax return.

 

 

And...you mentioned your state return.   There are a few states that tax Social Security.
