First, your website said that I did not need the deluxe package, but then it told I have to, so I pressed upgrade. Can you tell me why I need the deluxe?

Now I am at the filing stage and the website says I owe you $60 for federal (not the $30 it previously said) and $50 for both California and Illinois. My Illinois tax return has a zero balance, so I don't understand why I have to pay $50 or why I even have to file it.

What were you trying to enter when TurboTax said you must upgrade?

The Free Edition is only for very simple tax returns that only require form 1040 and no other federal forms. If you required any other form, you had to upgrade. Here is what the Free Edition can do:

There is another free product from the Free File Program that some filers are able to use. You would have to start over to use it.
You qualify if you had $36,000 or less AGI or $69,000 or less military family AGI or qualify for EITC. Click on See if you qualify then Yes (if you do) then Start Now button, then choose Create an Account.
