For some reason it wants to charge me when I checked off I want the free service

This is because you are in the Deluxe product, not the free product.  Either in the beginning when answering questions or at some point during the interview questions you entered something that would have prompted you to use TurboTax Deluxe.  This could have been something like home ownership. 

If you are itemizing your return, then you would need to use TurboTax Deluxe which is not free.  If you have certain income and deductions that need to be reported on Schedules 1-6 you would also need to be in Deluxe.  You can check this by clicking Tax Tools>>Tools>>View Tax Summary>>Preview My 1040.

If you do not have any attached schedules and are not itemizing, you can click clear and start over which will allow you to get back to the free version.  If you do have one of those attached schedules, you would need to pay to file.
