Form 1099-G Options

Why are there only 5 options to choose from under 1099-G?  I need to choose overpayment/refund from the state and that is not in there.  The closest thing is Business or Farm refund as that is the only option that says REFUND, but then it forces me to enter business information that doesn't apply really.  I did have business filings, but the small amount of $357 is not necessarily because of my business.  My husband paid a ton of state taxes.  It just seems to be so much harder than it has to be.

Even though state tax refunds are reported on Form 1099-G, they are entered in a different location of your return.  After you enter the information, there will be some follow-up questions to determine whether the amount is taxable based on whether you used the standard deduction or itemized deductions in 2019.

    Use these steps:

    • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
    • This opens a box where you can type in “state and local tax refund” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
    • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to state and local tax refund
    • Click on the blue “Jump to state and local tax refund” link and enter your information
