Former Employer Mailed W-2 to Parents Address - What Do I Report?

Hi all! Looking for some guidance regarding a W-2 I received from my former employer and address changes. For reference, I live in Virginia and changed jobs back in April 2022, which in the same year I also moved to a new address in July 2022. To ensure my W-2 was received on time this year, I changed my address at my former employer to my parents address since I did not know my current address till after I left my former job. Thus the W-2 from my former employer has my parents address on it, an address I have never lived at.

I know I'll need to report that I moved from one address to a new one. However, do I only report my former address that I actually lived in, and my current address? Or do I need mention anything about my parent's address since that is the address listed on the W-2? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You should enter the address on your tax return that you want to receive your mail at. It doesn't matter what address in on your W-2 form, the address on your return is where you will get your mail in case the IRS needs to contact you about your tax return or to mail your refund check to you should you choose that method of receiving it. The state listed on your W-2 in box 15 will typically dictate what state you will file your state tax return in. Even for that, however, you want your mailing address listed in case your state department of revenue needs to contact you.

Generally speaking the IRS - Feds' just want your current address, you will likely have to enter in Turbo tax all the addresses, as they look to make sure you comply with all state laws.

You may have accidently created a situation wherein you have to file a tax return for the state where your parents live as you used that as an "Income Address"...Honestly if you do and it is not a lot of money, DO IT, the machine will ignore you until you make a stink, then they will watch you 4ever.

Best of Luck.
