H4 to F1 visa change and joint tax filing

Hi, I’m on H4 visa and my wife is on F1 visa. She changed her status from H4 to F1 in September 2023. We want to file our taxes jointly for 2023 and have some questions.

Last year, we applied for an ITIN for my wife and mailed our federal tax return with the help of a tax agent. (We did file jointly last year as well)

This year, we want to know:

  1. Do we still need to attach a statement to our tax return that we are choosing to file jointly as resident aliens?
  2. If we don’t need the statement, can we e-file our tax return using TurboTax?

No. You do not need to submit an additional statement this year since you have already submitted one last year. You may efile your return as long as your wife has received her ITIN.
