I did my parents taxes through Turbotax and chose to mail them in. When they were received by the IRS they were entered into the system by someone imputing the numbers. They did not put any amount on line 4-a they did it as 0 dollars even though the amount was on the line on the submitted form. They also put the wrong standard deductions as both parents were born before 1954 and my mom is blind. On their tax form the boxes were check that they were born before 1954 and spouse is blind was checked. They were entitled to the $27,900 deduction and the IRS did it as $26,600. I called them today and talked over 1 hour. I am disputing this and sending in the Form 1040, 1099-R for both parents, the letter from my mother's doctor with the information that she is blind and has been since before 2007. I am also including a letter detailing all the mistakes. Has anyone experienced mistakes made by the IRS?

Did they mail it?  What did the IRS get wrong?

I mailed it. They transcribed the standard deduction wrong plus on Line 4a they put zero down but the Form 1040 had the correct amount in it.

I've seen many things missed on a paper filed return that someone at IRS has to do the data entry for.

You do realize when you paper file the return must be manually entered by a data entry clerk that is hired just  for the season and the last I heard they had a 24.5% input error rate ... no surprise they entered something wrong.  The fight to get it corrected may take several months ... and you may just need to amend the return ... that is easier than fighting with "city hall".  In the program change the entries until the return is as the IRS has it ... then complete the amendment process.   Then FYI ... always efile if possible where the error rate is only .001%.

Sorry ... I was tired when I read this.  Go with my other answer and just amend the return.

The reason I did not file electronically through Turbotax was because of a Form 2210. I read on the forum here at Turbotax that people were having their taxes rejected because of this form 2210. I will be filing electronically for 2019 and onward. I also had no idea that the mailed forms were entered manually. I learned something new. One good note the person I talked to from the IRS was a very nice.

I did get my numbers for the 27,900 because Turbotax did this. I also went to the 2018 Form 1040 instruction book on page 35 and it laid everything out for this amount. Thank goodness it is only at $130 difference on their refund.

yes happens from time to time on paper returns.   since you used TT why didn't you efile?  if it got rejected, we could have helped you solve the issue.

I didn't file electronically because of Form 2210 that they had to file. I went to the help section on Turbotax and people were saying their electronically filed taxes were being rejected because of this Form 2210.  I have learn a lot from this and will be filing electronically. I figure with the new that forms for 2018 so many mistakes would happen. It is a learning curve. Hopefully they will get all the kinks worked out.
