I am 74 and retired. I am the grandmother and guardian of my 16 year old granddaughter who has lived with me since she was 6 MONTHS old, full time.  I fully support her. She does not work and is a full time high school student.  Why is the new 2024 program telling me that I cannot file as Head of Household and must file as Single?  When it brings over her information from 2023 it does not fill in her "Status".

You may have answered a question incorrectly.

To claim a grandchild as your dependent

When you enter the child’s name in My Info, you will be asked “What’s your relationship to  [child’s name]?”

               Choose “another person”

a drop down menu will appear that lets you choose grandchild

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

When entering your personal information you should select Single.

When entering your granddaughter's information for Who Do You Support, select Another person and then select Grandchild.  For the number of months she lived with you select the Whole Year.  Select that she was Not Married.  When asked if she paid for more than one-half of her own expenses you should have selected NO.  And select NO for another relative supporting her.  Also, make sure that you did NOT check the box that her Social Security number was not valid for employment.

If you answered these questions correctly the program would have given you Head of Household filing status and asked a few more questions to verify your HOH status.

Go back through the entries for your granddaughter and make sure you answered all the questions correctly.  If the program still does not give you HOH status delete her as your dependent and re-enter.

    Thanks.  The program fixed itself.
