Question

Hello, I have been in the US as an F-1 visa holder since 2015. I was here for 9 out 12 months of those years. How do I inform TurboTax that I am not a citizen/permanent?

This is my first year filing as a resident and I am not sure how to inform the system that I am not a citizen/permenent resident but a  F-1 visa holder.

If you qualify as a U.S. resident, you do not have to tell TurboTax anything about your Visa status. You can file the same as a U.S. citizen. There is no question about visa status on the tax return.

If you are a nonresident then you cannot use TurboTax. You will have to use Sprintax.com to file a nonresident return.

F-1 visa holders are treated as nonresident aliens for five calendar years so you can file as a resident in 2020 if your met the substantial presence test.

Refer to Example 1 in Alien Residency Examples.
