In order to prepare your tax returns in TurboTax when your spouse does not have a SSN or ITIN, you will need to enter a "dummy" SSN just to be able to finish your returns in TurboTax so you can print, sign and mail your returns (You will not be able to e-file).

You can use the "dummy" 305-44-0001,  After you print your returns you will need to use "white-out" to erase the dummy SSN and in its place, if you are filing married filing separately, you need to enter NRA for nonresident alien. If you are filing married filing jointly, you need to add "ITIN Applied for" in the space for the SSN.

If you are married, you can only file married filing jointly or married filing separately.   you file

  • If you are filing married filing jointly, you will need to apply for an ITIN when you mail your return. (Returns will need to be mailed).  You will both need to sign a statement that you both are declaring your worldwide income for calendar year 2019.
  • She will need to apply for an ITIN on Form W-7 and include copies of documents certified by the issuing agency (such as a passport), or the original documents. Please see Form W-7 and instructions below.  The W-7 would be attached to the front of the federal return.when mailed.

If you file married filing separately you do not need to apply for an ITIN.
