Question

Hi. TurboTax clearly states that I can efile 1040X online for 2019 and later years. However, it is forcing me to print and file by mail. Why? How can I fix this?

Everywhere says I should be able to efile this, but it will not let me. Are they just listing their information wrong or can I efile my 2019 amended federal tax return with TurboTax and this is just an error?

TurboTax closed e-filing of all 2019 tax returns after October 2020. The 2019 amended tax return can only be printed and mailed.

I efiled my 2019 return on February 3, 2020. The IRS had some internal issues and was unable to send me my refund until September 17, 2020. The IRS told me I could not file 1040X until after my original return had been processed. By the time I could file the amended return it was November 28, which the IRS now seems to have lost. I think the deadline for e-filing an amended return should be extended. If I can mail something, why should I be able to e-file it?

TurboTax only offers e-filing of amended returns in the same tax year as the original. You would have needed to file last year, in order to e-file. TurboTax is considered a self prepared return. A tax professional can e-file an amended return for a prior year.
