Question

home office expense software error

When I try to enter rent into the home office deduction, the software multiplies the result by 1000.  I tried to enter rent expense of 12000, but the software converted it to 12,000,000 on Form 8829.  Same with utilities.  Does anyone have this same issue?  I can try to fix by entering rent as $12 instead of $12000, but that seems an inappropriate fix.

It sounds like you need to go over your home office settings.  The software thinks your expense is one thousand times what it should be because of the percentage of the house that you're using.  Make sure that the square footage of the office and the square footage of the home are entered correctly.  Also, check all of the other entries for that.  Something you have entered has thrown off the calculations.
