My boyfriend and I bought a house this year.  Can only one person claim that tax benefit?

You might be able to split it!  Whoever paid the mortgage and taxes can generally claim the tax benefit.  They also must have lived in home, as their primary residence, and owned the home (in most situations).  You would need to itemize deductions on Schedule A in order to benefit from the tax and interest deductions for the home.  Check out this article to learn more details Standard vs. Itemized Deductions.
