You will add him  to your 2021 tax return when you file next year.  You do not add him now.  When you add him next year, make sure you check the selection that he lived with you all year.

The IRS said that the portal for the monthly child tax credit payments would allow folks to enter babies born in 2021, but so far they have not made that part of the portal operational.   So you will need to claim your child on your 2021 tax return for the child-related credits.  When you enter the information in My Info make sure you say the child lived with you for the WHOLE year---you need to say that for newborns.

The IRS was supposed to update their portal Manage Payments so a child born in 2021 could be eligible for the monthly Advanced Child Tax Credit payments in 2021.  This has not happened and there is a good chance it will not happen this year.

Go to this IRS website for the portal - https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/advance-child-tax-credit-payments-in-2021

Go to this IRS website for information concerning the portal updates - https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/2021-child-tax-credit-and-advance-child-tax-credit-payments-t...

You will be able to add your child as a dependent on your 2021 tax return and if eligible receive the Child Tax Credit on your 2021 tax return.

Most important thing is that you MUST file the original return with the child's SS# on it ... do NOT file a return until you get it.  Go on extension if you must to wait for the number if needed.  Failing to heed this warning means you will lose $5000 in credits.
