In 2019 I'm a NRA, but in 2020 I am a resident, and I am supposed to receive the covid stimulus check, while we still haven't filed tax for 2020 so I didn't receive the 600 check. I found in the irs website it said in this case I can get recovery rebate credit in my 2020 tax filling, how should I proceed this in Turbotax? Thanks

On your 2020 return (filed in 2021), you will be asked about the stimulus money. Enter any amount you have already received (if any) . Then the program will calculate if you are owed more money (which would include any amount you qualify for the second stimulus money), or it will show you don't qualify.

After the Other Tax Situations section (Federal Review) of the 2020 TurboTax program you will be asked about the stimulus payment received or not received in 2020.

After you asked about the stimulus payment & you qualify, you will get the Recovery Rebate Credit (stimulus) on the 2020 federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 30.

Are you sure?  Similar boat, I received my first one but not the second one — I closed the checking account between payments.  Confirmed was sent back to IRS.

I cannot for the life of me figure out any place to enter the recovery rebate credit.  No joke I have gone completely thru the turbotax process at least 3 or 4 times start to finish and never get asked about any stimulus payments.  I have my 1040s ready to file and see line 30 left blank.

Can i just print this off and edit it myself?

Are you eligible to receive the second stimulus payment based on the 2020 federal tax return?  Did you indicate in the My Info section you can be claimed as a dependent?

The stimulus questions are asked in the Federal Review section of the TurboTax program.  Any payment you were eligible to receive based on the 2020 Federal tax return but did not receive will be entered on the Federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 30 as a tax credit.  The credit is included in the federal tax refund or it will reduce the amount of federal taxes owed.

I have been trying to file my 2020 taxes since October.  Each time being rejected for more information.  I can not pull that document up to correct or add more information requested.  I have been putting information in but it is going on the 2021 file.  I can not get it backed out so I can complete 2020.  I have tried following the instructions sent to me but I don't get the options to correct the 2020 tax form.  Joanne H.  [email address removed].  Thank you for your support.  This will be a joint filing for the $1,200 covid stimulus for 2020.

You will be able to access the return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it.   But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2020 returns is now permanently closed.  Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2020 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

how do i get my stimulation checks

February 22, 2022

Only the third stimulus of $1,400 can be claimed on the 2021 tax return.

If you are eligible but did not receive your third stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct or if you did not receive the stimulus for a dependent, you can claim it on your 2021 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off
  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen
  3. On the next page titled Did you [or your spouse] get a third stimulus payment?, answer Yes or No
  4. Follow the interview and answer all questions
  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

Please read this TurboTax Help topic for more information on the third stimulus.

To check that the Recovery Rebate has been transferred to line 30 of form 1040 and included in your tax refund, please preview your form 1040 by following these steps:

  1. In TurboTax, open your return
  2. In the left-hand column, locate Tax Tools, click on the drop-down arrow then click on Tools
  3. On the Tools Center page, click on View Tax Summary
  4. In the left-hand column, click on Preview my 1040
  5. Your form 1040 will display.
  6. Scroll down to line 30 - Recovery rebate credit and you should see the amount of this credit on this line.
