tax return has 84,488 on line 5a of schedule A of 1040. It's just plain wrong, I've checked the inputs over and over. Line 5b is correct but turbo tax software os so lame that I can't go to forms, click on the number and see were it's coming from

Sorry  i missed it was about Schedule A.  Ignore my post.

Is 5a too low or too high?  5a doesn’t matter as long as 5b taxable is right.

For each 1099R…….If the gross amount on a 1099R is the same as the taxable amount the gross amount is not included on the "a" line.  So line 4a or 5a could be different than all the 1099R forms box 1.  And it’s possible for the “a” line to be less than the taxable amount on line b.

5 b is correct and I get it that 5a doesn't impact the tax but it still really bothers me to have a large number on there that is wrong (should be zero since there was no sales tas or other witholdings)!

Did you look at the sales tax section?

    Deductions & Credits

    Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

    Sales Tax

Is the box by line 5a checked?

If the box is checked, it is picking up sales tax
