Question

How come individually each of us would get about a $1000 tax return, but since we are married we owe $600. Does it really cost us $2600 to be married

That is an impossible question to answer. There are too many variables. There could be credits that are reduced, etc. The best thing to do is do two mock returns to see the difference. You can abandon the returns when you are done with them.
