Here is a great video from Turbo Tax that can help explain why your return dropped.

What changed? Did a child turn 17? Changed jobs? Have you checked that you inputted everything correctly. You can print last year's return and this year's return and compare them.

I recommend you actually plan your paycheck and refund to get what you want, when you want it:

tax bracket calculator from TurboTax to keep an eye on when you hit the next tax bracket
use the IRS W4 planner to determine how much money you want in your paycheck or in a refund. Investing now, splurging later, or some combination is up to you.
