How do i avoid paying health insurance benefits if i was unemployed since march?

i was let go in march and lost my benefits. same thing happened  year ago. i did get an exemption and didn’t have to pay last year but do this year?? did something change?

No, there's no federal penalty for not having health insurance. The federal individual mandate penalty was removed at the end of 2018. 

 

There's a penalty in New Jersey, DC, Massachusetts, California, and Rhode Island, so if you file in one of those states, you may be penalized on your state return.
