How do I enter a negative number in TurboTax? Do I use a minus sign or parenthesis?

Put in a minus sign on it.

For example: -1234

That doesn't work. TT doesn't allow those characters (Schedule 3, Line 42)

There is no Line 42 on Schedule 3 for a US Form 1040. What Schedule 3 are you referring to?
