You cannot ask for an extension now.   If you needed an extension you had to request it by April 18.  Midnight on October 17 in your own time zone was the e-filing deadline even if you had an extension.  If you did not file by that deadline then your tax return is now just late.   You will not be able to e-file.   Your return will have to be filed by mail.  Print, sign and mail it.

If you mean that you tried to e-file on 10-17  and the e-file was rejected, you will have five days to fix it and re-file.   If you still cannot e-file successfully within five days, you will have to file by mail and send a copy of the rejection notice along with your mailed return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
