I am using the Premier Turbo Tax on-line version for the 2020 tax year.

Distributions from 529 plans are reported on Form 1099-Q. As long as the distributions are used to pay only qualified education expenses, the beneficiary doesn't pay income tax on the distributions.

If you printed your return but you didn't mail it in, you can reopen your return to add form 1099Q.

To reopen your return:

  • Login and go to your 2020 Tax Timeline.
  • Click "Take me to my return" button.
  • Scroll down to "Some things you can do."
  • Choose "Add a State."  (you don't really add one; that's just to get the return to open up.)
  • Once the return is open, you can work on it and make any changes prior to filing.

To add form 1099Q:

  • In the federal return, go to Deductions and Credits.
  • Scroll down to Education.
  • Select ESA and 529 Qualified Tuition program (Form 1099-Q)
