how do I file my taxes for 2020 before it's 2021 tax time?

Midnight tonight--- on May 17, 2021 --- is the filing deadline for 2020 tax returns. If you owe tax due for 2020 it should be paid or will be subject to interest and/or late penalties. You can get an extension to file your tax forms and e-file by October 15---but you have to pay by tonight even if you have an extension.

After October 15, e-filing will close and a 2020 return will have to be filed by mail. There is no penalty for filing late if you are getting a refund.
