How do I find out if all or some of my pension from the Wisconsin Retirement System is after-tax? I contributed to the WRS, and it is reported in box 14 of my W-2.

Contributions for the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) are deducted on a pre-tax basis for federal and state taxes . These contributions are not taken pre-tax relative to Social Security and Medicare deductions.

Your taxable wage amount  in box 1 has been adjusted for amounts shown in Boxes 14, box 10 and for Code C, E, G and W appearing in Box 12( if you have any).

Thank you for your help.  I did look at my pay stub and yes, the contributions are pre-tax.

    Missy K,

You are very welcome.  It's amazing how unreasonably knowledgeable various tax agencies want us to be!

    Missy K,

    Possible options.

    (a) look at pay stubs from when you contributed and see if the withholding for the WSR appears in the pre-tax or the after-tax area.

    (b) Look at a W-2 from when you contributed and see if there is a code G or EE (section 457 contributions) in Box 12.  If G it was pre-tax.  If EE then it was after-tax.

    (c) call your plan administrator and ask.

I suspect option (c) might give you the most comfort, but it is worth knowing the results of (a) and (b) to bounce off the representative as a further check.

Thank you.  I checked my pay stub and got my answer.
